Safety comes before the schedule. This page explains what happens when weather or sea conditions make a boat trip or flight unsafe. The binding wording is in section 7 of the Cancellation and No-show Policy.
Example. You booked a day trip to Nusa Penida. In the morning the harbourmaster stops departures because of high swell, or the captain decides it is not safe. The trip is moved to another day you both agree on, or cancelled. You pay nothing, and nobody’s record is affected. Ordinary rain on a safe day is not a reason to cancel without consequence.
When a trip can be rescheduled or cancelled without penalty
- Official warning or restriction. For example a BMKG weather warning, a harbourmaster or port authority suspending departures, an airport or aviation authority restriction, or an official closure of a road or port (for example during a volcanic eruption or on Nyepi).
- Captain's or pilot's safety decision. The captain or pilot, acting in good faith under safety rules, decides that the trip cannot be done safely. This decision is final.
When it does not apply
- Normal, foreseeable weather such as ordinary rain or light swell, when the trip is safe and lawful.
- A change of mind or seasickness.
What happens
- The owner tells you as soon as the decision is made.
- The trip is rescheduled to a date you both agree, or cancelled without penalty. Normally nothing has been paid yet. If you did pay the owner anything in advance, it is returned in full or moved to the new date. Each listing states whether the owner offers rescheduling, a refund, or your choice.
- A cancellation for these reasons is not recorded as a late cancellation for you or a cancellation by the owner.
- If conditions force a trip to end early, you and the owner agree a fair share of the price.
Local notes for the sea
- Harbourmasters can pause departures from places such as Sanur, Serangan, Padangbai and Nusa Penida in high swell.
- In Bali the dry season (about May to October) is generally the best period for sea trips, with July and August the busiest.
- Nyepi (usually in March) closes ports.
- Rules and conditions change. Always follow the captain’s briefing, wear the life jacket when told, and listen to the harbour authority.
Aircraft and helicopters
Flights depend on weather, airspace and operator safety decisions. Terms are shown in the quote or listing. Operators may delay, reroute or cancel for safety, and the same principle applies: a safety cancellation is not penalised and amounts paid are returned or moved to a new date as the quote states.
