Sewa Rent does not provide insurance and does not hold deposits. Both are matters between you and the owner. This page explains what to look for.
Insurance
Who is insured? Each listing states the owner’s insurance status: none, third-party, total-loss-only (TLO), or comprehensive. Ask the owner what is covered, the excess (own risk) and exclusions before you pay.
| Status | What it usually means |
| None | No insurance. You bear the cost of damage, theft and injury claims according to the rental agreement. Common for motorbikes. |
| Third-party | Covers damage to other people or property, not the rented item. |
| Total loss only (TLO) | Covers the item if it is stolen or destroyed, usually with an excess. Does not cover repairs for minor damage. |
| Comprehensive | Covers more types of damage, normally with an excess. Exclusions apply (for example tyres, windows, interior, theft in some policies). |
Local examples (indicative only). Operators in Bali describe excess (own risk) amounts of roughly IDR 800,000 to 5,500,000 depending on the vehicle, and damage-cover add-ons priced per rental or per day (for example from around IDR 500,000 per rental for a bike). Street rentals normally have no insurance.
Things that can void cover: riding without the correct licence category, drinking alcohol, or using the vehicle outside the agreed area.
Your own insurance. Travel and medical insurance is separate. It may be void if you ride without the correct licence category or after alcohol. Check your policy before you travel.
Deposits
A deposit is money (or another agreed security) that the owner holds during the rental to cover damage, loss, fines or late return. It is returned at the end if nothing is wrong.
- Who holds it? The owner. Sewa Rent holds nothing.
- How much? The listing states the amount and form. Typical practice: motorbikes roughly IDR 300,000 to 2,000,000 in cash; cars around IDR 1,000,000 to 1,500,000, or a card hold at larger companies. Some owners take no deposit and rely on insurance with an excess.
- Never your passport. Owners must not keep a passport or original ID. Offer a cash deposit or another agreed security instead.
- Get it in writing. Amount, form and when it is returned should be in the listing and the rental agreement.
- Photos protect both sides. Photograph the item at pickup and return. See the Damage and Security Deposit Policy for the return process and disputes.
Fines and accidents
Traffic fines (tilang) during your rental are normally yours to pay. In an accident, notify the owner immediately and obtain a police report where possible. Details are in the rental agreement.
